To develop English communication skills necessary for functioning in a non-Japanese language and cultural environment. This includes living and working abroad and working with foreigners in Japan in the various fields offered by the School of Architecture.

To develop English communication skills necessary for functioning in a non-Japanese language and cultural environment. This includes living and working abroad and working with foreigners in Japan in the various fields offered by the School of Architecture.

The course is limited to 20 students. If there are more than 20 students, the instructor will discuss the situation with the students and determine the class roster.

Initial stages of the course will focus on reinforcing and developing English communication skills, both linguistic and cultural.

Focus will then turn to specifics in the fields of Structural Architecture, Building Systems, Architectural Design, Interior Design, Urban Design, and Landscape Design.

For example, a student will choose aspects of their field and describe the situations in detail. Then the instructor will guide the class through questions and discussions on the situations and provide linguistic formations and communication insights that will enhance the students' abilities to function in an English environment.

The students will focus on language formations needed for going through airports (navigating immigration & customs, etc.), getting around local environment; students will focus on asking for and understanding directions; use of trains, buses, taxis; students will focus on producing and understanding basic wh-questions and responses related to directions.

Students will focus on ordering/buying, communicating with waiters/waitresses; communication for shopping; students will focus on typical daily interactions they may have about town; public behavior – public manners; free-time activities, entertainment; reinforcement of use of modals for politeness.

Continue reviewing notebook, listening to English, practicing with classmates, and building vocabulary.

Grades will be based on students' oral and aural performance, participation, presentations, and writing assignments.

In class verbally and in comments on papers/email.

No textbook is required; however, a ruled notebook (about 19cm x 24cm) is required. A small notebook (for example, a Moleskine 9cm x 14cm) is strongly suggested.

This class will be conducted solely in English.
The particular details of each class and assignment will be set based upon each student's particular research field and their English language ability.
